Thanks to the high content of volatile oils the plant has a saturated fragrance and flavor with aroma of dianthus. It will give a special cunning flavour to salads and soups also will be suitable for fish and meat, as well it would be good with a garlic sauce. This sort will create tiny bushes in a high of 30-60 cm. This mix will be suitable for pots and will be good for kitchen interior.
It is nurtured by a seedling way or by landing into the ground. Crop for seedling is usually made in the end of March – the beginning of April. The real crop is made in May or the beginning of June. It is better to put crops into the ground in the beginning of June. The plan of the landing is 30x30 cm. Basil prefers well-structured land with a lot of humus. It is important to pour it enough.
* Spicy aroma of south…
When you pass by a seller of spice you can clearly smell it and recognise basil… It is the most popular spice in the world, especially in Kaukasus, where it is called “reigan”.
There are a lot of varieties of basil (Ocimum basilicum) and all of them are different from each other. The leaves are tiny or big, smooth or not, green, purple and deep-purple, there are so many opportunities. Flowers can be white, pink or purple.
The origin country is east-India and Iran, where it is known as a medicinal plant. It was also well-known in Egypt, but not in Europe. It is thought that once upon a time in Jerusalem the empress Elena, the mother of Constantine the Great, found it near the casket of the God.
She was impressed by a never-seen flavour of basil. Ever after this for the orthodox Greeks basil is not just a spice, but a miracle. Sure, basil is having something magical inside. It is well-known as a symbol of love, immortality and family happiness. Perhaps its popularity is also connected with its therapeutic properties. Leaves, roots and seeds are quite popular in a folk medicine.
Basil is popular due to its antiseptic affinities. There is also sugar, carotin, phytoncides, vitamins C, B1, PP, but it is admired mostly because of its smell, because there are a lot of varieties: citric, mint, allspice, anise, pepper and more. It will suit every dish, especially with cilantro. In the east-kitchen it is used as fresh and dried. Also it is well-known in Europe: France, Italy and Greece. People are using as a part of meat, fish and vegetable dishes. It is also used instead of pepper with rosemary. As well, there are a lot of spicy mixes with basil.
Basil is usually grown in a light land with enough sun. If you want to grow it up from a crop, you should put it into greenhouse or pot. Watering should be middle. It is better to plant it after 10 June, when the ground is warmed. Basil does not need to be very cared, just remove weeds and loos the ground.
Here, in Estonia, climate is quite cold, so it would be better to make sure that basil is warmed well, or you should leave them at your greenhouse, between peppers and cucumbers, because in that case basil will help them with its antiseptic features and will fight against aphid.
Dried basil is better to keep in a dark place, in airtight dishes, only in that case you will keep the smell of your basil in a well condition. If you want to have a fresh basil all over the year, then just grow it up in the pot at your window sill.
